10 years ago David Holford and Hilary Carter had and idea to organise a Marathon, not Just any Marathon “a Trail Marathon” along the Pilgrims way. The task was so big the Farnham Weyside Rotary Club to which David was a member, Got involved and with much help from David`s Wife Veronica, became the success it is today, Sadly last year David Holford passed away leaving a legacy of THE FARNHAM PILGRIM MARATHON.
To celebrate the 10th year we thought we would organise it Backwards !!!
So how does it differ on the Marathon Route ?
The Start will be very much the same for the First 2 miles… past Seale Church (where the road would be to busy later on in the day). You will go up onto Puttenham common and see the great views at 3 miles and drop down past the pretty Tarn and Cutmill Ponds, The route then climbs up past Rodsall Manor and drops down towards Shackleford, very pretty views in front, then follows the Fox way to the Good intent Pub turning right towards Puttenham golf course, through to Watts Gallery there is a slight climb then back downhill towards Guildford with some really nice vistas, still have to go up and round St Catherines Chapel and down to the river Wey. This is where the hard work starts climbing from the River Wey to top of Pewley Down its runable but gets steeper as you get higher, you then have a brilliant 1 mile of downhill on the One Mile Path to the bottom of St Marthas Hill its not a bad climb to the top and just remember the views are Spectacular take a breath and admire the view !!! You drop back down, which you need to be cautious, to Chilworth Manor, past the lakes and up towards the Chantries the view of Shalford church with its bright green Spire to follow for about 2 miles, once past the Mill cross the road, and back down to beautiful views of the River Wey. Once Across the A3100 a past the Police headquarters you head past open fields and keep a look out to your Left for Loseley House a little climbing and past Watts Gallery again and gentle uphill all the way to Puttenham… Once past The Good Intent at 22 miles you Climb all the way up Luscombe Lane to Puttenham Common (you will not Thank us for that) ….. but a great downhill to Totford Hatch, once refreshed you climb the last climb onto the North Downs way and a lovely downhill Past the salad fields and left towards the finish on Binton lane, last few ounces of strength past the Barley Mow to Cheers on the field and Cake on the table ….. ITS a Pilgrimage – Not a race, you are now a PILGRIM !!!
